STATEMENT

Maryly Snow is a 78 year old Oakland artist, and a UC Berkeley retired emeritus librarian. Maryly exhibits with California Society of Printmakers, Kala Art Institute, and the Lamorinda Art Association.

On display at Café Leila are 4 pieces from her series “Have We Destroyed Ourselves Yet?” Here Maryly addresses socio-political issues, such as climate change, represented by the spiraling suns, and the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. New York overturning Roe v. Wade. Younger people, who can access medicine abortions via abortion pills, might not understand the symbolism of the coat hangers, which, in the pre-Roe v. Wade days, were said to be used for illegal self-induced and “back room” abortions. The human figures are begging, praying, fretting, and/or running and fleeing in a frenzied state of confusion doing all at once. These original stencil prints use Prismacolor, watercolor pencil, gouache, and acrylic gouache.

By contrast, Reconsidering John Cage (with Akhenaton) has it’s own quiet elegance, quite different than the vibrant, colorful Have We Destroyed Ourselves Yet?

Maryly is currently travelling in the Middle East. You may reach her at maryly@snowstudios.com and through her website www.snowstudios.com after February 14, 2023
